Push-button cistern knackered and fiddly (pics included)

Hi, First time here, not DIY savvy at all, and have just encountered first toilet problem since our move.

The toilet suddenly was not flushing today, the button remained pushed down, so I tried to fix it. We could not even get the lid off the toilet and , this was our first encounter with a push-button cistern. Now it looks like we might have snapped the connection between inside and out just to get the lid off, as you can see the residual white plastic at either end in the pics.

The question is do we need a part (guessing yes!) and more importantly do you know a way to fit it. We tried fitting the button back on and while it's easy to get the two prongs lined up and pushed it, then there's no obvious way to pull the button up again if you're doing it with the lid fitted. (Much easier without). Or is this difficulty simply because it's snapped. And how can get the lid off safely next time.

Sorry if this post is a bit vague.

Hi.

We have had the same problem as yourself. The button broke so we went everywhere to find a replacement button - & I mean EVERYWHERE. No one seems to sell the button itself, only whole kits - and the kits are all different to the model in the toilet. I can't find a manufacturer or any other info. So, sorry - but nice to find someone else in the same boat.

I think it will mean replacing the whole flushing mechanism (about £20 from diy shops). Great news hey?

sorry I can't be more helpful

See our projects section and go to the project on push button (European) cisterns. There is a troubleshooting guide in there.

Thanks for the replies!

I did go to the project page first - that's how I found this site via Google. But the mechanism inside looks different to ours so I couldn't quite figure it out! Yes, it's DIY cluelessness on my part, I'll admit... :)
