Brrrr... Afraid to put heat on..Pipes banging All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

Hi,

I have noticed that my water pipes are banging close to the gas boiler after the heating goes off. It's very loud and a bit scary and has never done this before.

I have bled all the radiators but there was no air in them. I recently got a new electric shower in, which got an airlock shortly afterwards so I don't know if it has something to do with it although it should only have been connected on the cold water system.

Can anyone help me. It's getting really cold and I'm afraid to turn on the heating in case i'm damaging something.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
We have a similar problem, when the boiler thermostat is set to high the pipes make some crazy banging noises. If the thermostat is set to low its ok but the house doesn't get warm enough.

I've also gone down the route of bleeding the radiators to no avail.

Try checking that the supply and return to your boiler are the right way round, if put in wrong then you will get a bang (loud) when the boiler fires as the valve is the wrong way round and is being forcibly closed.

hi sounds like expansion and contraction
are they loose or well clipped to the walls they may need to be secured more
little thing i did many years agoe was measure and cut a peice of wood and place between the pipes
wther it will ?

Thanks for your replies.

I did a bit more investigating and I had a look at the pipes after I turned the gas burner off and despite all the noise they don't seem to be moving, its like the noise is inside the pipes.

There is also a 'Ping' like a piano wire snapping.

Does anyone know if it's possible for the pump to be broken and for the radiators to keep heating. The pipes around the burner and the burner itself are getting very hot but further up at the pump the in-pipe is not too hot.

The pump doesn't seem to be making any noise so I'm thinking it's either the pump or as suggested the valve.
