Disposing of Cast-Iron Bath - Safest way?

by RK » Thu Oct 30, 2008 1:15 pm

Hi,

I have a very heavy metal bath (possibly cast-iron), and I am having difficulty disposing of it.

Scrap metal merchants will not come to collect and say it is worth nothing.

Can I break it up into smaller pieces and then scrap?
What is the safest way to do this?

I have a 9in angle grinder - shall I use that?

Many thanks in advance.

RK.

Break it into small pieces and leave it outside. Your friendly Rag and Bone may will have it away the same day I bet. I do this all the time, and the record is under two minutes on the driveway!!! He pulled up just as I was carrying the first bit out the front door.

Last time I had to dispose one of these, I used a 7lb Sledgehammer to break it into smaller pieces, and then took it down the dump.

Ear defenders - Mandatory, goggles - recommended, leather faced gloves - essential unless you like to sight of blood - shattered enamel is as sharp as broken glass.

Thanks all,

I used a very heavy but quite short hammer, wearing goggles, ear defenders, leather gloves and a baseball cap.

I also searched YouTube and found a video which was very useful for a systematic technique (as opposed to smashing it in an erratic way)...
