Fitting `p` shaped bath with side panel

Hi all,
I am about to purchase a 1700mm `P` shaped bath to replace my old 1600 bath.
At one end of the bath that I have now there have been tiles fitted on some timber that overhand the bath to cover the 80mm gap between wall and bath, the bath is 1600mm.
I do not want the same gap from a new bath but the new bath will need to be cut into the walls about 10mm both ends or 20mm one end to fit.
The worry I am having is that the plastic panel will then be too long to fit so question is can the panel length be cut and do they then look ok once fitted.
I see that each end of the panel is finished flat to suit an end panel if one were used...
Any advice much appreciated
