Renewing Tap washers

The washers need renewing on the bath taps & I can find no way to isolate the taps without draining the water tank. I've checked under the bath & sink with no luck. Is there any way I can isolate the taps as I don't really want to waste the water. I seem to remember when a BG engineer renewed a leaking radiator valve he told me he was able create, now bear with me if I'm wrong!, an air lock?, that enabled him to replace the valve without draining the radiator or tank. Is this possioble for a tap?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You wont waste that much water, turn off the cold mains, and open the hot tap, don't turn the gate valve off as they can sheer off inside and can be a pain to change with a tank full of water.

You wont waste that much water, you wont empty the tank.

The engineer would have used a bung in the vent and cold feed.
