As I know next to nothing about plumbing could anyone advise me if it would be reasonably easy to replace the waste plug hole in my bathroom sink as it is showing signs of rust.

This is a tricky one to answer. In the past, I have had to use an angle grinder to remove old wastes yet on some they can be undone with almost no force at all.
Part of the problem is gaining access to the large nut and finding a way of stopping the plughole from turning whilst you remove it.
If the basin sits on a pedestal, it may not be possible to change the waste without removing the basin from the wall.

yeah relatovely easy. It is normally held on with a back nut below the sink with maybe a little sealant under the actual metal inside the sink. Sometimes there is ascrew that goes down the centre.
