Hi,

I have bought an old house which has a sink in every bedroom! I've removed them all and capped the pipes under the boards. However, one set of pipes and waste pipe are coming out of the wall (horizontally) and are plastered in to the wall, and I want to remove them or cap them off (never to be used again). Can anyone suggest the best way of dealing with these pipes? Do I need to dig them out of the wall and cap off below the boards here too?

The most important thing to remember when capping off unwanted pipes in a potable water circuit is not to leave any legs where water will remain unused for any length of time. This is referred to as "dead water" and and you should consider the water may lie undisturbed in the pipe for many years.

Another point to consider is if air becomes trapped in a long capped off leg, this may contribute to "water hammer" and is extremely annoying and possibly damaging.

There is no need to remove the pipes from the wall, just cap off at the tee under the floor.
