Only one radiator not working!

by jayned » Tue Dec 02, 2008 10:44 am

Hi

This is a puzzling problem.

My heating system working fine except one downstairs radiator (dining room) not working.

All other radiators working fine All radiators have been bled. As I say all others up to temp. and pressure in system ok.

We turned off the radiator in question in summer to paint. Now it will not heat up. Have opened valve to full, but pipes coming out of wall to the radiator are still cold , my guess is that no hot water is even reaching the radiator.

Any ideas what the problem is and how to rectify it? any comments appreciated.

One radiator not working

Have you checked that the valve is working. Remove thermostat cover and check that pin is free and presses in smoothly and springs back out when released. If not, give the pin a couple of taps with a hammer on the end to free pin. Be careful not to pull pin out or you will get a jet of water. You don't need to hit the pin very hard

if you have thermostats on your radiator, you need to remove the thermostat head and you will see a kind of pin sticking up on the radiator, you need to tap that pin with a hammer until it pops up.
If you dont have thermostats on your rads you need to turn off all of the other rads.
Hope this is helpful

Hi,

Ensure the small valve is open (anti-clockwise) using pliers or small spanner. My guess is the other is a TRV,and the pin is stuck. Take the head off- undo the ring below the head to check. The pin should be visible,if not,tap the valve body with a hammer and/or pull pin up about 2-3mm. Voila!

That has happened to me a few times and happened the other day when two new rads were added to the system. The plumber said my lounge rad needed to be bled. It has two panels and the bleed screw on the front panel is missing, so he said it had obviously not worked for years, and wouldn't believe me when I said it was working fine the previous night. With the heating on, I switched off all the other rads in the house, leaving only the lounge rad on, and the rad heated up in about half an hour. Then you can switch the other heater back on.

Yeah mackers probably right. Turn off all other rads, this then forces the water to flow through the rad which should cure the prob.
