Hot water turns cold (specifically on the bath)

by sickofcoldwater » Mon Dec 15, 2008 8:25 pm

We have a combi boiler which has just been serviced. The guy did say that we would need a new one soon as it is pretty old.

The problem we have is this. There was a small leak on the boiler a couple of months ago, when this was fixed the pressure raised to just below 3 bar, no matter how many times I bleed the radiators the pressure raises to just below 3 bar again. Recently the hot water, specifically to the bath, runs for about 30 secs - 1 minute hot then runs luke warm / cold. The water to the kitchen and bathroom sink are both running hot.

Is this just a case of replacing the boiler or is it something else which could be more easily rectified?

Any ideas?

Pressure stays at 3 bar: is the link from the mains riser to the boiler's heating circuit still in place and open? this would keep pumping in more water even as you bled it out the other end. Make sure this is closed / disconnected after repressurising the system.

Bath water cools off: if you had someone in to 'tinker' with the leak and the boiler have they adjusted the mains riser isolating valve or the valves on the hot water tap at the bath? If these have been opened up the flow may now be stronger than you expect for the same tap setting so your maybe getting more water through than the boiler can cope with. try not opening the bath tap so much / reduce the flow?
