pipe freezing

Has anyone used a method whereby water is frozen in a pipe before a radiator valve is replaced? I have shut off both valves, drained a very rusty, leaky radiator and removed it. I now discover that there is also a leak from the underside of one of the valves and judging by the corrosion on the copper pipe and soggy flooring this has been happening for quite a time. I would like to avoid draining the system if possible but would like to replace the valve.

Why not drain the system ? its not a major task.
What type of system do you have ?

Pipe freezing equipment is good, only used the spray can type, but heard the electric one is alot better. Make sure heating is off and will not be turned on, and that the water in the heating sytem is already cold and you shouldn't have any probs. There's also a bung kit that you can use.
