Is this a Lead or Copper Pipe????

by d4rr3n » Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:54 pm

Hi guys,

Just in the middle of stripping out my kitchen and noticed that there is a small water leak from a water pipe in the wall which feeds the upstairs bathroom. After taking a closer look I thought perhaps the pipes are lead due to their colour. But after sanding one lightly with SP, it changed colour to a coppery orange colour. What colour are lead pipes when new?? Check the photo:-

Just want a second opinion as I'm not sure what new lead pipes would have looked like. Hope it is copper then it wont be such a pain to repair, otherwise I'll be having to get myself some LeadLok :?

Thanks

That's a heavily oxidised copper pipe. Lead is a dull silver greyish colour and even softer than copper.
