Tapping HDPE

I have an HDPE tank and would like to put a 5/8 fitting into it as a vent. Can HDPE be tapped with a "regular" Tap & Die set ? Any special precautions and or tools required ?
Thanks,
Robert

Not as I know of, normally a hole is cut in plastic tanks and a proper tank connector is used. However there isn't a fitting I am familiar with that will allow an imperial connection. What are you connecting?

Thank you for the reply !
I charged ahead and cut the hole and tapped it. The fitting will hold only an air vent hose. I spoke with the MFG. of the tank and with a Rep. from an adhesive company. Both avoided comments that would allow future litigation--Gads, what we have come to--and both let me know that what I am up to is common and with little or no risk.

Well, I hope it works, but you know, I don't understand why you didn't use a proper tank connector. They only cost pence and instead of thinking it should be ok, you would know it would be.
Also, you do realise the thread won't be watertight? Let's be hoping that won't be an issue.
