Is it worth lagging the (very short) section of exposed pipework that leads up to the tap on my outside wall ? I wonder whether it could get cold enough in Winter to freeze (and burst).

yes it can freeze and burst, so best to lag pipes if possible

Mine's lagged, all 6 inches of it!

During the winter, i close the valve and leave the tap open, so any freezing will expand out the tap and not swell and burst the pipe. (Just remember the taps on when you turn it all back on!)
