2 Questions regarding hot water/immersion

Had some problems with hot water supply to (pumped) shower. Adjusted the thermostat in the shower valve today, but no luck. Found that the pipes from the hot water tank to the pump (for the shower) were not as hot as the pipe running to the taps. As you can guess all other taps had very hot water. Decided to run the immersion to see if water would get any hotter, and yes it did, still not as hot as the taps but hot enough. When the immersion heater is on now every 5 minutes or so pipes in the whole house are making a banging noise as I never heard it before..
1)What can this be ? I also installed a timer switch today, but I don't think it is causing all this, as I have also uninstalled the timer again and the noise was still there.
Technically speaking I don't think it is a classic immersion it is a so called Geeza2000 , it sits in a pipe running parallelly with the hot water tank.
2)Anybody have any idea how this thing works ? Why did the previous owner not just use a clasic immersion ?
