Limiting the damage

Is there any reason why I shouldn't turn off the water supply to the entire house (at the main stopcock) before going away on holiday? This would surely limit the damage done if a plumbing problem occurs while I am away.

My parents always turned the water off at the main incomer when we went on holiday and this never caused a problem.

It would be worth ensuring your central heating is not set to come on as if you have a gravity fed or pumped system with a header tank as there would be no feed to replace any lost water.
