Buttons on my push button cistern have pushed through

The push buttons on my push button cistern have pushed right through into the cistern. The lid comes off and I can access the cistern but I can't get the buttons to stay in place in the lid anymore. They keep slipping back down into the cistern. Help and and advice needed please
