intermittent 'clunk' noise

by alanatdrm » Fri Jun 15, 2007 9:54 am

Hi, i've been experiencing an intermittent 'clunk' noise over the last few weeks since the water supply was turned off.
I can't pinpoint where it is coming from, but it is always a single 'clunk', which can happen several times over the space of 5 or 10 minutes, or most often, with an hour or 2 between 'clunks'.
It happens whether a tap is open or not, and seems to be gaining in frequency (not loudness) as time goes on.
I've also been aware of a strange noise when the hot water tap has been running for about 10 minutes. I don't know if this is connected to the 'clunking', or if it is a seperate issue. It is a slow, pulsating 'vwwoahh, vwoahh' noise, if that makes any sense! It slowlly subsides and dissapears after turning the tap off.
I wasn't too concerned about it until I read an article last night about 'water hammer', where this bloke had his bathroom flooded after the water pressure broke something in the toilet cistern.
Hope you guys can help on this one...getting a bit paranoid now!
Cheers,
Alan
