I would like to move my washing machine. Does it matter how far from the sink it is?

If the waste from the washing machine is connected to the sink trap then yes it does, unless there's somewhere you can put a seperate waste pipe in for the washing machine.

The hot and cold water pipes will be ok, as you should be able to move these to where ever you want, but don't try extending the waste hose from the washing machine.

As someone who has purchased a waste extension hose kit in order to move a washing machine further away from the sink..i'd be grateful if you could elaborate on why I should not have done this!

It's all subjective really....

....personally I don't like to connect machine wastes to sink traps at all as every time the d*mm machine empties it blows the waste plug out of the sink and you lose all your washing up water.......infuriating!
