Cold Water Tank Inlet Valve - Should I add Isolating Valve?

I need to drain my cold water tank in the loft to install a tank connector. To do this I will need to turn off the stop cock as there is no separate isolating valve at the tank inlet.
Can anyone advise if it is good practice to use the opportunity to add a valve at the inlet pipe or should I not bother? And if so what sort of valve: gate valve, isolating valve...? It will obviously be at mains pressure.
