joining BSP fittings on Thermostatic Mixer Valve

Hi,
I am plumbing a under floor heating system. I am now at the stage of piping up to the Mixer Valve, the fibre seal seams too thin as there is very little difference between the 2 parts whether the seal is in or not.
Is it common practice to use a sealant or thread sealant as well.
