Overflow

my toliet as an internal overflow but problem is after flushing the toilet the overflow doesn't stop. looked in the cistern and it just just keeps filling up with water and this can go on for hours.
anyone know what i can do to sort this out?

Look at the project on cold water tanks, cisterns and valves it will give you an idea on how to stop water coming into cistern when its full

ok i checked the project. if i understand correctly it is the black rubber diaphragm that needs replacing?
am i on the right track?

ts the valve mmdately nsde the cistern with the ball on the end of it. The ball lifts up with the water level and the arm of the valve closes it when its reached the required level. If this valve is not working water will just keep coming in.

the ball is lifting up but the valve is not stopping the water. is this valve available at DIY shops?

established that the valve is not working. can i buy a valve from a diy shop?

Yes.
But remember to turn off the water before you start.
