Hot water cylinder leak but is it ok to replace join?

Good morning all.
Found out the indirect hot water cylinder was leaking last night from the top nut - on the hot water exit.
I closed off the SC on the vent pipe in the loft and that managed to stop the seeping via a vacuum.
So, i just wanted to check, by closing this and the cold water inlet, i can remove the top nut and replace - with the only water coming out being what's between the stopcock and the tank?
2nd question (really stupid) its a 22mm pipe on a right angle - are HW tank nuts proprietary, or a universal size?
