Imperial taps or replace cassette

I am trying to change bath tap with shower fitting (hot and cold pipes come out of wall not bath) but i have realised that the distance between the pipes is 6 inches not 15cm so I can't get it on. I could live with the current tap but is now dripping a lot - so I tried to change the ceramic cassette but despite buying the right size box spanner to fit round the nut there is no room for it to turn. I will be doing the bathroom up in a year but don't want the tap running until then. anyone know where I can get bath/shower unit with imperial measurements.

Hi seyeclops
There are surface mounted valves around with adjustable centres, failing this there are also cranked adaptors which fit on the pipes coming out of the wall.
