Dismantling a tap

I'm trying to dismantle a pillar tap to find out why it is binding. I've taken the top cover plate off and removed the screw from inside, but the handle doesn't lift off. I've tried gently tapping, but no upwards movement. I can't see anything else that needs releasing. Do I just have to hit it harder? The fixing screw was at the bottom of a 12 mm hexagonal chamber inside the handle section - is this relevant? Thanks in advance.

My sincere advice to you is that a sink pillar tap is not worth repairing. It is possible to go to the merchant's and buy a new set for about £12. Go and buy a new set and fit them. While you are there buy two top hat washers for the underside of the sink top. Before disconnecting the old taps remember to turn off the water ( both cold and hot ), and also replace the tap connector fibre washers as old ones, once disturbed, can leak.
