Using a thermal store for hot water, standalone without heat-pump

by bobdabuilder » Wed Oct 20, 2021 10:22 pm

I have a standard vented hot water system right now.

There is a 3.0 bar shower pump in the attic, it pulls water out of the vented cylinder and distributes the water to all showers and taps.

The cylinder is 180 litres and it is not sufficient any more.

As I'm planning to do a full energy efficient retrofit in the next couple of years, I thought it would be a good idea to buy a thermal store now and use it without a heat pump, just using the built-in electric element

I would insert the thermal store in one of two places:

a) at the input to the existing immersion cylinder, to pre-heat water before it goes in the immersion

b) as a replacement of the existing immersion cylinder

Can anybody comment on either of these choices or the general strategy?
