Why would tissue be collecting up the side of an inspection chamber ? Anyone experienced this

Hi pepsiandcoke,
You may have a partial blockage downstream from the inspection chamber or your mains drains are not coping with the combined discharge in your area. IThis will be causing a backup partly filling the inspection chamber which will leave floating material on the walls.

Drainage company came out checked the main line no issues and checked from inspection to Main line no issues when checked with camera . When toilet flushed goes down soil pipe and tissue just lands up side of inspection . Haven’t checked when lid off yet but know it collects up side

Hi pepsiandcoke,
Thanks for the update - excellent you’ve had pipes checked.
Does the tissue end up above and on the outside of the bend in the IC? Suggest you look in IC when the toilet is flushed to see what happens.

Hi pepsiandcoke,
Trace where the side pipe comes from and try flushing toilet paper down the loo connected to it. I suspect you will find the force of the flush shoots paper up the side wall.

Hi pepsiandcoke,
I’m going to assume you are not experienced builders.
Get a length of 100mm/110mm soil pipe close to the length of the inspection chamber and cut it in half along its length. Fit this on top of the invert pipe. Mix some rapid setting cement with sharp sand and lay this along the left haunching so it is partly over the plastic pipe. You will have to clean off the haunching and rough it up using a cold chisel so you get a good bond. Once the cement has set remove the plastic pipe and you should end up with almost a bob sleigh section which will direct tissue down into the invert pipe rather than up the walls.
This will be a make and mend solution but the only alternatives would need drastic modification of the chamber base.

Hi thanks for reply . What also crossed my mind was toilet pressure being too high ? Would that also cause it ? As when flushed toilet fills instantly .

Hi pepsiandcoke,
Although you haven’t said it’s likely that the source toilet is close to the IC. The rate at which the WC refills is not relevant.
Whether you can reduce the rate at which water is discharged at each flush will depend on the type of toilet you have. If you have a toilet with a high level cistern you could try changing it for a low level one. If it is already a low level toilet you may be able to replace the internals to give a slower flush rate.
All in all not a simple problem to solve.

Hi pepsiandcoke,
Hopefully you will be able to view the image I have attached. The red outline is the area you will need to chisel to give a rough clean surface, the blue are on the section is the area you should form to add to the haunching. Use half a soil pipe or a piece of gutter to create the side of the haunching..

Hi . When I have cut the soil pipe in half along it’s length as in u shape I take it - I cement this into the section you circled in red and keep the soil pipe there indefinitely?? Or am I taking it out .

Also is there another solution as in a bend I can just push in to pipe on side ??
