Stuck 55mm nut in Mira shower

by stronach » Tue Apr 09, 2024 6:45 am

My 29 yr old exposed Mira shower, not electric, is leaking, obviously a seal needs replacing somewhere. I have watched the Youtube video on how to do it and have the service kit but cannot shift the 6 sided 55mm nut. Have tried boiling water, hitting with a hammer all round it and penetrating oil but pipe wrench won't shift it. A post on another site suggested an impact driver, I don't have one, but then it said it might end in grief. What might it do if one was used? Would the vibration damage the other parts of the unit. I am a bit stuck at the moment like the nut!

Hi stronach,
From experience your chances of getting the cartridge undone are slim - it’s probably naturally welded with limescale in the housing. If you have a centre punch you could try driving it round using the punch at an oblique angle - use the punch on flats on the opposite sides. The danger is you may disturb the fixings or the plumbing joints. Good luck.
