Leaking valve tail on towel rail

by mortod » Fri Nov 16, 2007 6:17 pm

Recently installed a towel rail, and had a lot of problems getting a seal on the valve tail where it screws into the rail. Initially I was using normal PTFE tape which failed even with 20 turns of it. Then tried gas tape which also weeped. Thought I had fixed the problem using LSX on its own, but after 2 weeks the joint is weeping again.

Any recommendations for getting a good seal on what seems to be a very sloppy screw thread?

could be cross threaded, how easy was it to insert the valve tail
can you swap the valves around and see if it leaks that way
you could eliminate the valve as a problem and it could be the radiator

Don't think it cross threaded - it screwed in very (too) easily. The valve itself is very good quality and looks to be accurately machined. I suspect the thread in the radiator is at fault. But it must be possible to resolve rather than going down the route of using the warranty?
