Immersion Heater just stopped working

Recently our Immersion Heater just stopped working, there is power in the cupboard as the plug socket has a switch with a red light on it which comes on, there is a timer in between the socket and the actual heater and it is still going but no hot water at all.

To be honest I don't know where to start, do I need an electrician or a plumber to investigate the problem? Is it likely that an immersion element would just stop working? or would it start to burn or smell if it was being fed electricity and not heating the element. Or perhaps any other kind of sign?

At the same time as this we have been having problems with our power shower, a valve had actually popped and water just drained out the bottom. I replaced the valve and this fixed the problem. But today we starting getting a low pressure warning on the shower.

I am not sure if the two problems are related, or if we are just unlucky to have problems at the same time. Would an immersion heater stop working because of limescale and this at the same cause problems with the pressure of water leaving the tank or something like that. I am guessing at this point.

Any ideas? I need to get this fixed as soon as possible as we currently have no hot water :( If anyone could recommend a good plumber / electrcian (depending on who we'd need) in the South London / South Croydon area?

Many thanks.

My guess is the immersion element has blown (exacty as a lightbulb does) and you will need a plumber to fit a new one. Of course it could be a faulty thermostat, but either way something needs re-newing.

It is possible that limescale has caused the element to overheat and fail.

There would be no connection with your faulty shower and the loss of hot water.

Hi
You should start by changing the emersion heater 'stat' as it is easy and cheap to do, if this dosen't work then change emersion heater.
Am also in SW London
