upvc cladding

I want to install white horizontal upvc shiplap cladding (from Wickes) on several south facing areas of a residential building, to improve general appearance & reduce maintenance. Currently, the areas are covered by painted plywood sheets fixed to battens. Firstly, can I fix the cladding direct onto the plywood (using the standard upvc bottom, side & top fixings) and if so, do I need to put a vapour/damp proof membrane on top of the plywood, as a precaution. Finally, someone suggested the cheaper option was to install hollow tongue & grooved soffit boards instead of the shiplap cladding. Any help or advice would be appreciated
