Roof and wall straps and knocking noise in house

Hi guys,
For the last 8 years or so my house has been knocking in the night and I have not had a decent nights sleep. I have replaced floorboards with flooring panels and cushioned every pipe in the house which has made a great improvement. Changed the fridge, the bed, ripped out the bath and put a new one in just to get to the pipes under the bathroom floor. But the knocking noise is still there, 1.30, 3.34, 5.50 etc, a series of knocks sometimes culminating with a clang or bump when it all stops.
Been in the attic where everything seems in order except I have noted that the roof and wall straps are just tacked on, or to put it another way not fitted tightly. Should I bang the nails in tight?
