Replace slates held on with slate hooks

I'm looking for advice on replacing a roof slate. Except for the first line of slates - which are nailed on - all the slates on my roof are secured using slate hooks. The broken slate I want to replace is in the middle of the roof - so it is hooked on and the top of it will be under the hook of the tile above.
I can pull it out as it is broken, but how would I get the new slate in?
Many thanks if anyone has any suggestions.

Hi phil70,
If your slate hooks are the double bend type it should be straightforward to remove the broken one and slide a new slate in. Make sure you use a slate that is a couple of mill narrower than the gap.

Thanks Stoneyboy! The hooks are in the form you describe - from what you're saying I guess there must be enough free play between adjacent tiles to be able to wiggle them out and back in again; I was concerned as from the cut-away pictures of how the slates lie using this kind of hook that they looked really tightly located, but your comment is reassuring.
