Will Installing British Gypsum Solve Noise Issues From Neighbours?

Hi there, wondering if anyone can help
Our internal walls do not have plasterboard behind them, its just a thick layer of plaster then brick. The plaster is hollow in some places as it was literally crumbling off the wall and falling off when the wall paper was removed.
We can hear our downstairs neighbour still, after soundproofing under the floorboards. Although I have read up on soundproofing walls, do you think that normal plasterboard (skimmed) reduce the noise? Compared to what we already have?
We have looked into having British Gypsum installed, but only to walls we share with our other neighbours as its expensive as well as losing 55mm each wall.
