Hello

I rent a room in a flat above the shop. The problem is that the shop's fridges are buzzing so loud that I can hear them in my bedroom. It's really annoying and it's really affecting my sleep, I can even hear it during the day. I asked the owner to do something about it, so he fixed the fan motor however I can still hear the humming - it isn't as loud as previously though.
My question is, is there any way I can soundproof my floor? I cannot replace the floors and put a carpet on them as I'm not the owner. I bought a huge rug and it helped a bit but I was thinking of getting some thick underlay. Do you reckon it will be a good idea? Are there any alternatives? I'm desperate!

There's two quick replies I can offer the first is kill the shop owner and cut off his electricity supply/ Bingo! The humming stops, however the sound of sirens may keep you from your slumber and it's also has been said illegal however much of an annoyance neighbours can be. The second is to record the noise and the housing department at your local council can and do take action to quell it.

As the first two options were so good here's a third. Go to your local carpet store and buy up some remnants and old sample books. Focus where the noise is greatest place the remnants over it first then if necessary the samples as pretty rugs. you can also get some hardboard from your local DIY outlet and they can deliver it as well or cut it into the appropriate sizes that you would need to have previously measured and you may get them in your car easier (assuming you have a car not a truck or van). lay them on the floor area with the smooth side up then the remnant and if necessary the samples. If your partner loves your socks off address them with "Oh Squigy cheeks I need a little bit of help here …." then get them to do it I bet they would.
