I have heard it is possible to plumb in a washing machine outflow pipe without using a trap. Some sort of anti suction device maybe?
Anybody know anything? Many thanks.

The anti syphon device is used when connecting to a an inline system. All appliances, sanitary fittings and drains must be protected from the main sewer by a seal (usually water). If a washing machine was connected directly, gasses and odors from the sewer would vent back into the appliance.
