Rear mounted cooker 'hood'?

Hi all,
My wife suggested that instead of mounting a cooker hood OVER the cooker, we mount it behind. The logic being - we are putting a range cooker in front of an existing chimney breast which already has a large opening that used to house the floor standing boiler. So we would like to plumb an extractor fan into this space and extract up the lined flue.
1. is this permissable / a good idea? I think so - which is rarity as me and the missus hardly ever agree in the first place.
2. Does anyone know of such a cooker hood, or am I going to have to modify something to fit? They all look bloomin expensive to me anyway!
Many thanks,
David.
