I'm fitting a dishwasher I got from a friend but there is only a cold connection, is that right?

Yep

The dishwasher has a heater element installed ( like a kettle or shower )

If dishwashers take hot water directly into the machine the heat actually bakes some food stuffs like egg yolk onto the plates and makes it impossible to remove. This is why a dishwasher rinses everything in cold water, heats it a little and rinses in warm then finally heats it fully to wash properly and clean/steralise all contents.
