Dishwasher - Fills While Washing machine is running

Hotpoint DWF 33 -

The dishwasher runs ok, and empties completly after any cycle.

However, if the washing machine is running, the dishwasher fills up over the boottom revolving sprayer.
(Dishwasher would be turned off while the washing machine is running)

Therefore as soon as the dishwasher door is opened it starts to leak.

Any ideas???

I had this problem once

My dishwasher and washing machine were competing for the same waste pipe

Gloucester Sparkey is correct. Both machines are probably joined to a common waste outlet. Just before the waste from your dishwasher joines the main waste there should be a non-return valve (basically a flap) this has failed, probably worn, needs replacing; simple job. The only other answer would be that each machine has a seperate waste and the underground waste water system is partially blocked and backing up. This is possible but unlikely as water would back up into both machines.
