Have a Hotpoint washing machine that doesnt seem to start properly. When you attempt to start it makes a noise as if it's trying to load but never does (the noise you always hear for a few seconds except it just continues).
Any ideas what it could be or what could be done?

Check the simple. Has the drive belt come off? Unplug before opening of course.

The first thing a washing machine does on switching on is to fill with water. The switch operates a solenoid on the hot and cold water inputs to allow inflow. It won't go on to the next stage until the water has reached the desired level.
Water can be prevented from coming in by blocked inlet filters inside the hose coupling on the back of the machine. Another possibility is that the water is flowing out of the machine at the same time as it is trying to fill but inthat case you would hear the water entering and leaving.
