tiles onto artex

by diynot » Thu May 22, 2008 7:39 pm

I have a plasterboard bathroom wall that has been papered, artexed and then painted with bathroom paint. I wish to tile the wall. Do i need to rip everything back to the plasterboard or is it possible to tile directly on top of this mess?

The trouble is, the tiles may not adhere to surface, or one of the different layers may fail causing the tiles to fall off. If the wall is a stud wall it would be very easy and cheap to remove the plasterboard and replace with new. Then tile directly onto the new surface. No plastering needed.

you could even just stick new plasterboard up over what's already there. i'd screw it to the joists though, not dot and dab over that background. will save a lot of time and mess though you'd lose an inch or two from the room.
