Different thickness tiles

I've been tiling the kitchen walls and the tiles used on the main walls are quite thick. The ones for the splash back behind the cooker are mosaic tiles - where you get quite a few glass one on one sheet - trouble is they are much thiner that the wall tiles that will be at the side of them.

Since the difference is about 5mm is it acceptable to stick 3mm MDF on the wall and tile directly on to that. I was thinking about building it out with adhesive but i will not get a nice flat finish.

3mm is the thinest sheet material that i can find and no plywood.

Cheers for any help or advice.

Dont use MDF unless you want to be redoing it in the not too distant future. MDF is NOT water resistant and if you are using tubbed air drying addy it will absorb mositure from the addy as soon as you apply it and start to swell - even if you've primed it.

No reason at all not to use some adhesive to build up. Personally I'd trowel in some rapidset and tile over it within 3 hours as it wioll be dry enough by then. You won't get a smoothish surface using tubbed carp but you will with rapidset. You don't need to have it perfectly flat anyway.

Cheers

i agree, i had a similar thing when doing my kitchen floor. i ended up doing a seperate skim on the floor where the mosaics were going, then fixing the tiles next day. looks great even if it did take a little longer
