I was going to pull up the tiles in my kitchen as they are cracked, and the plan was to sand and polish the wooden floor undernearth. To my dismay under the tiles were not the floor boards I expected but chipboard. What options do I now have. The kitchen cupboards are relatively new so they cannot be removed and a new wooden floor fitted, do I have any other
alternatives.

Why not fit wooden floor over the top of the chipboard?

Probably the best/most effective solution? I have a 'thing' about chipboard and always seal it with (4 -1 solution) Unibond? I had similar to this, the chipboard was OK so sealed it, then laid a pretty good Ash-effect laminated floor and it does, look very attractive (and, fairly inexpensive too?)

You can work out your way with granite worktops if it has to be permanent and not changing all the time. Granite worktops will give you the much needed maintenance free ruggedness and cleanliness in the kitchen too.
