tiling damaged brickwork wall

Hi,
I am currently replacing my bathroom tiles. My bathroom was half tiled. I want to tile it from floor to ceiling. Removing the old tiles uncovered another layer of smaller tiles behind the main big tiles. I removed those too. Now I am down to the plaster layer. This now has a lot of remaining old adhesive. Some area where i removed the tiles uncovered the main brickwork which is slightly damaged and has holes in it.
The area that wasnt tiled has plasterboard which i am thinking of removing too.
Questions:
Do I remove the plasterboard totally and start from scratch?
What do i do about the old plaster layer (with old adhesive on it)?
How do i repair the brickwork? Cement and sand?
Once the brickwork is repaired and flat, do i plaster (what do i need) or install plasterboard (how)?
Much appreciated.
Regards,
