Plywood base query

Hi
hope this isnt a duplicate post, but i have the following query.
Ive read in many places that before laying large travertine tiles on my bathroom floor, I should lay a plywood base of probably 18 mill as opposed to 12 mill. This though would considerably raise the height of the floor from the hall carpet, therfore anybody walking into the bathroom would probably trip up.
Obviously im concerned more for my large travertine tiles here!
Anyway, is there any possibility to lift up the existing floorboards and lay large sheets of 18 mill ply directly onto the floor joists?
Any advice appreciated.
Ta.
