Replacing tile backer board with no studwork after leak

Hi,
I had a leak in a concealed shower unit which only covered a single tile. The tiling is on a tile backer board so I multitooled the tile and board out. I'm replacing it with a bar shower but as there's no studwork around the removed tile I wondered if there was a particular way of fixing it. The entire shower has been built with tile backer board and the cubicle has been built out a couple of inches to accommodate the pipework. there is also a piece of backer board a couple of inches behind which is flush with the rest of the wall. I was going to glue and screw some small noggins onto the backer board that the original shower was mounted on, fit some ply and another piece of backer board on top to tile over. Is this a reasonable solution? Has anyone come across this before and found a better way of doing it? The ply is to give strength to the new bar shower being fitted.
