Re-tiling the wall after old tiles have been removed

Hi there,

I am having my bathroom done up, and I need to re-tile the walls.

The old tiles have been removed (I couldn't tile over them as I wanted to extend the area of tiled wall), but there are still thick traces of the adhesive on the wall in some areas. Do I sand this down first before starting to tile? Or do I just put the new adhesive straight on top and start tiling?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Its best to have as level a surface as possible to tile onto as spreading the adhsive in a uniform thickness gives it greater stability. However a few small lumps here and there do not hurt. Try and chip the adhesive away as much as possible but dont start removing great areas of plaster!
