hi, ive tiled a few kitchen walls and so far so good. my inlaws have asked me to do their bathroom, i just want some advice firstly tho, whats best to do first, walls or floor? and any particular adheisives best? when i did the kitchen the grout seemed to look rough when it had dried, obviously it needs to be water proof i understand, but is the adheisive and grout in one good to use for this job? oh and lastly regarding laying wood down on the floorboards whats best to use?
thanx

1. Tile walls first - new floor cannot be damaged whilst doing walls.
2. Use waterproof adhesive and separate grout. (Tile shop will recommend best).
3. If tiling on to a wooden floor, check soundness first, then lay 6mm plywood fixed down every foot.
4. Use two part flexible adhesive (expensive stuff) for fixing floor tiles.
5. Do not grout same day as tiling.

i would agree with martin except on the ply wood i would recommend every 6 inches on 6 mm ply as 6mm ply would flex to much if can get awat with it i would use 9mm ply

turns out. the floor under the lino is 1 inch thick chip board in real good nik, so i can tile straight onto it but do i need to do anything to the wood first?

You could PVA first, but isn't necessary.
One point worth mentioning though, personally, I would still ply the floor first. Not for structural reasons, but for when the floor needs replacing in the future. Saves the hassle of having your ears burning when a tiler has to take it up in 10 years time. Lol.

Bolster chisel and elbow grease is all that's on offer I am afraid. Or better still get those who walked on it!!!!
