Exterior wall fixings

by Sheal » Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:12 pm

Hi all,

Two weeks ago my son fixed a wooden number plaque to an exterior wall with brass screws thinking they wouldn't rust. They have and now I have horrible orange streaks down the wall where the rain has been blasting it.
Would anyone have any idea what fixings I should use please. I don't want to abandon the plaque as it was hand made and cost a fair bit.

either the screws were not solid brass (plated steel possibly) or there are other iron components of the plaque.

brass will not rust - replace with solid brass screws.

Thanks Chris. The screws were sold to me as brass and they are certainly brass coloured. Looks like I've been fleeced!

Hi Sheal

Another option for your fixings would be to use solid stainless steel screws

Had a similar problem a few years ago when brought good quality chrome plated brass house numbers supplied with "chrome" looking screws.
These screws quickly rusted and stained the chrome numbers so got numbers replaced by shop and brought good quality stainless steel screws.
Now now more rust problems
