Help Identifying Type of Wood and How to Cut and Fix to it

Hi all,
I'm new to diy and struggling to identify what this panel is made from, see attached images. I thought it was mdf? Has no grain pattern on surface but then the edge does have a grain so not so sure. It seems pretty hard and is about 7mm thick.
One of the images shows a scored rectangle. I'd like to cut this out and wondering what saw would be suitable? I have a pad saw but it's too hard for that.
I then want to screw a metal vent over the hole, bearing in mind it's 7mm thick and there will be a cavity behind how would you fix the vent? Some kind of toggle screw? I bought self drill plasterboard fixings but again I think it's too hard for those.
Thanks for the advice!
