Can't get a Sensible Stud Finder Reading

Hi all, I have been trying to put up some shelves and guitar brackets. The brackets are going up in my office on a wall that has no power outlets on either side and nothing below it. Also the shelves are going in the bathroom on the outside facing wall where again there is no power. However when I check with my stud finder it tells me everything has live wiring (even the wood door), so I can't be sure. It's a 30's brick house so I am struggling to see why there would be anything there but I am nervous about not having the assurance as DIY projects tend to go wrong for me. Do we think it's safe to drill in? (It'll be about an inch or so)
